Nina Simone

This portrait of jazz musician and prominent civil rights figure Nina Simone was created for a print fundraiser via my swing dance troupe. She performed at meetings like the Selma to Montgomery Marches and wrote protest songs that were oftentimes banned from radio for candidly discussing racial discrimination.

100% of the proceeds were donated towards the Youth Art & Self-Empowerment Project, a local organization that puts on year-round workshops for youth in the Philadelphia Prison System's adult jails and provides continued support and leadership development for youth who have left the incarceration system.

With the support of community, we raised $520, which was triple matched by various organizations at the University of Pennsylvania. To support YASP’s mission, you can donate here.
